Confused about the alphabet soup surrounding DVDs? Well, here is some information that might make it easier to understand. DVD stands for Digital Versatile Disc (not Digital Video Disc as many people think). Most manufactured DVD discs are stamped and used for large distribution such as movies. All the versatile capability on the DVD has been lost on most users. Most people would have liked the DVD to be like a CD - just give me something that will record video like an audio CD or even better just like a VHS videotape. Unfortunately, versatile and simple did not simultaneously in the vocabulary of the people who wrote the specifications for the DVD. To create a DVD with video content requires a step called "authoring." Some of the authoring steps are taken care of automatically by some of the new standalone DVD recorders. However, to make DVDs that are useful for presentations or distributions the video, still images, data, etc must be assembled using a computer with a special authoring program.
Here is a brief summary of the recordable formats used for audio, video and data information recording used for those shiny little disks.
CD-R - "Compact Disc-Recordable". These discs can be recorded only once. It was the beginning of all those silvery coasts found all around people's homes. Originally used only for audio but now includes data and video. These discs hold around 600-700 megabytes of information.
CD-RW - "Compact Disc-Read Write". These CDs have a surface that allows the user to read and write to the disc numerous times - generally up to about a 1000 times. These discs are much less compatible and generally only can be played in CD recorder that can record RW discs.
VCD - "Video Compact Disc". A VCD is a CD-R disc, which has video, recorded on it. The video images are compressed using MPEG-1 low-resolution algorithm. No all DVD players will play the video.
SVCD - "Super Video Compact Disc". The SVCD uses the MPEG-2 for compression and provides better pictures than VCD but less quality than a DVD. SVCD video can be recorded on a CD.
DVD-R - "Digital Versatile Disc-Recordable ”. The DVD-R is the first "record only" format of versatile disc that provides MPEG-2 video storage.
DVD-RW - "Digital Versatile Disc - Read Write". The DVD-RW is a format of the versatile that can be recorded, erased, and re-written up to a 1,000 times.
DVD+R - "Digital Versatile Disc-Recordable". The DVD+R is a second major "record only" format of the versatile disc that provides MPEG-2 video storage.
DVD+RW - "Digital Versatile Disc - Read Write". The DVD+RW is a format of the versatile that can be recorded, erased, and re-written up to a 1,000 times.
DVD RAM - "Digital Versatile Disc - Random Access Memory". The DVD-RAM format of the versatile disc can be written and read much like a hard drive. It can handle all forms of data.
